Literally hours after my post about passing on the opportunity to go to New York and pitch my book, I got an email. In said email were instructions to submit my book to a contest held by publishing houses in Europe, with the chance to win a contract and trip to London for a media release/promotional tour.
That opportunity? I’m all over it! Several reasons contributed to this decision.
A) I can submit/pitch from the comfort of my own home. I don’t need to find time and money to travel right away.
B) If I get signed by a European publishing house, the distribution will happen entirely over seas allowing the subjects of my book aside from myself to maintain their privacy.
C) I potentially get to return to London, which I’ve wanted to do for ages but never have the time and resources to do so.
D) Publishing advance means actual cash upfront to do all of these things with little or no cost to me as long as my book takes off.
WINNING ALL AROUND RIGHT THERE. Of course it’s not entirely easy either. I’ve already made my submission, but there isn’t a guarantee that I’ll be chosen by the publishing house or even the contest administrators to get to the next step of pitching to the publishing house.
The odds are actually more in my favor than New York simply because there are less than 500 submissions so far, and none in my genre at the moment. If they choose a book from each genre I’m an automatic in. However submissions are open until August so that’s no guarantee.
I don’t know. It’s still a long shot in the dark, honestly, but I feel much better and much less apprehensive about London than I did weighing my options with New York. We’ll see what happens, I guess!
Hell, maybe I’ll change my mind and do both? 😜
