Kevin and I have decided to make some changes to the House of Hale. In addition to my CrossFit training the entire family is joining me in eating better. Because of my PTSD and the hormonal imbalances that come with it, I’m always going to have a spare tire around my middle, and be a bigger girl. Childbirth didn’t help that any lol. I’m not obese by any means, but the days of single digit sizes are far behind me. My fitness goals are no longer to lose weight, but to be as fit and healthy as I can. I’m still hoping that a diet change and regular exercise will slim me down a bit, but it’s no longer my primary focus.
Due to my shift in goals, and as part of the whole CrossFit thing, I started researching into this newish diet, the Paleo diet. Well lol actually it’s not NEW at all. It’s based primarily on the diets if the hunter gatherers during prehistoric times before agriculture really took over as the primary source of nutrients. Lots of meats, berries, fruits, nuts, veggies with no dairy, grains, or Legumes. I’m still not sure why the Legumes didn’t make the cut because we just started researching the diet this weekend, but that’s the gist. Obviously because of the inspiration for the diet it’s encouraged to make as many of your foods organic and unprocessed as possible, but it’s not required.
I’m excited that we’re going to be doing it as a family. Nora and I generally try to eat Organic as much as possible anyway, but Kevin’s favorite meals are loaded with pasta and carbs. Mostly boxed meals, and TV dinners. I’m switching over to strictly Paleo, (mostly to have an excuse to buy more organics because I LOOOOOOOVE me some organic produce lol) but Kevin and Nora are going to keep cereal, and some dairy in their diets.
Nora has always been half dairy half almond milk since she weened off of breast milk, and I always make sure she has veggies in each of her meals. Really the only grains or carbs she gets are her cereal for breakfast and any sugars in her juice with her snacks in the afternoon. It’s actually kind of funny. Because I’ve always tried to give her organic foods, she hates Cherrios and most processed snacks. Won’t touch them lol. She doesn’t like soda, or anything extra salty. Her only vice is McDonald’s, because my only vice is fast food. It’s going to be the most difficult thing to give up, especially since there are days where I just don’t feel like cooking. Lucky for me, even following a “strict” Paleo diet I can still work in three “cheat” meals per week.
The other great thing about this diet? NO PORTIONING. Whoo! Yep you eat until you’re full three times. Day with a snack. It’s as easy as that. 🙂 and now all this talk of food has made me hungry lol. Until later Bloggies 🙂
